You are listening to the Expresso Entertainment Update. Here is the latest news from the world of South Indian Cinema brought to you by The Indian Express.
Let’s begin with some news on Telugu actor Mahesh Babu’s latest movie Sarkaru Vaari Paata. It is now available on streaming giant Amazon Prime Video. The film will be made available for all subscribers after 10 days. The movie follows the story of a US-based moneylender, who comes to India on a personal mission but ends up fixing the corrupt banking system that’s unfairly taxing the unsuspecting, hard-working common people to clear the unpaid loans of the rich. The movie received mixed reactions from critics and the audience. The film managed to run to packed houses during the opening weekend but its earnings dropped in the following days. The makers, however, have claimed that the movie is a “blockbuster.”
“Moving on, the trailer of Nani and Nazriya Fahadh’s much-awaited film Ante Sundaraniki is out, and the movie looks like a fast-paced, modern-day rom-com.
In the trailer, we see that Nani’s character wants to get away from his controlling family and live an independent ‘cool’ life in the US. Nazriya plays a photographer who is ambitious and focused on her career. The major conflict here appears to be that the two characters come from different religions and their families do not approve of their relationship.
Ante Sundaraniki is written and directed by Vivek Athreya. The movie marks the Telugu debut of Malayalam actor Nazriya Fahad.”
Meanwhile, the team of RRR is on cloud nine, not only because of its mammoth success at the box office but also because the film is having a dominating run on streaming platforms. Directed by SS Rajamouli, the magnum opus revolves around two freedom fighters, played by Jr NTR and Ram Charan. Though Rajamouli tries to be calm when someone mentions RRR’s success not just in India but in international markets too, internally, he is all excited about it. During a conversation with Variety, the filmmaker accepted he feels like ‘dancing’ when he hears about the success of RRR as it means his story reached more people. Now, SS Rajamouli is looking forward to collaborating with actor Mahesh Babu for his next project.
“In other news, the trailer of actor-filmmaker SJ Suryah’s upcoming movie Bommai has made quite an impression on everyone. The who’s who of the Tamil film fraternity heaped praises on Suryah for his uninhibited performance of him as a deranged lover.
The trailer shows Suryah as a working-class man who seems to be far removed from reality. He seems to inhabit a world of pure absurdity that no one around him seems to grasp. Judging from the trailer, it seems like Suryah’s character develops a fascination with a mannequin at a dress shop, where he’s employed. Bommai is directed by Radha Mohan from a script written by MR Pon Parthiban. The film also stars Priya Bhavanishankar as the female lead.
Let’s move on to the current talk of the town, Tamil superstar Kamal Haasan’s Vikram that has hit the theaters recently. The 67-year-old star has created a new benchmark in Kollywood with his marketing blitz across the world. In the last 10 days, Kamal traveled to cities across the country and even flew out to other countries to create awareness about Vikram’s theatrical release.
It is not every Friday that you see the biggest stars of South Indian cinema coming together in a movie. It’s something that rarely happens in Tamil cinema. And Lokesh Kanagaraj has pulled a casting coup of sorts by putting Kamal Haasan, Vijay Sethupathi, and Fahad Faasil in the same movie.”
Following up on “Vikram”, Politician-actor Udhayanidhi Stalin watched Vikram on Wednesday in a special screening arranged for him. And it seems he is impressed by the final cut of the movie, which hit the screens today. Udhayanidhi’s reaction to Vikram seems very similar to Kamal’s response when he saw the movie for the first time. At the trailer and audio release event, editor-director Mahesh Narayanan revealed that Kamal said “awesome” while talking about the film with him. The film marks Kamal’s comeback to the big screen after a gap of four years. The filmmakers have hinted at turning Vikram into a movie franchise.
“Meanwhile, The makers of the Rana Daggubati and Sai Pallavi starrer Virata Parvam announced that the film will hit screens on June 17. The movie, which has seen several delays due to the pandemic, was earlier scheduled to release on July 1.
Inspired by true events from the 1990s, Virata Parvam will narrate a love story against the backdrop of the Naxalite movement in the Telangana region. While Rana plays the role of Comrade Ravanna who is known by his pen name Aranya, Sai Pallavi will be seen as his admirer of him Vennela.
Sudhakar Cherukuri of Sri Lakshmi Venkateswara Cinemas is bankrolling the film”
Lastly, we end this bulletin with some news on the upcoming “Major”. Adivi Sesh spoke about how It is no secret that the biggest, most successful Hindi film of all time is Baahubali. And, now the second biggest, most successful Hindi film is KGF. He added, “At the same time, with Major, it is important that we say we wanted to give the audience an authentic Hindi film experience. So, we shot, wrote, and designed every scene in Hindi and made it in Hindi. And, we followed the same process for Telugu.
